10 Sad and Extremely Depressing Video Game Endings

10 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
As the cutscene starts "She knew what would happen, she fulfilled her mission." We learn that The Boss wasn't evil. She was an undercover agent simply doing her job.Snake (Known as 'Naked Snake') spends the entire game trying to kill The Boss and her evil henchmen. We come to learn that she was actually under orders with the US government and never with the Soviet Union.
Snake stands over her grave and salutes her as we learn he can never tell her secret. She requires the world to remember her as a traitor.
9 Red Dead Redemption
A both sad and classic ending is what Rockstar did with Red Dead Redemption. We start as a cowboy in an old western-themed atmosphere and through all the troubles we face nothing hurts more than the ending.We play as John Marston and experience his life and grow with him only to die in the end no matter what we try.
When we emerge from the old barn after a 3-year jump in the plot line; we are facing down many gunmen and only have a few seconds where we can shoot a few of them. No matter how hard we try to overlook those things they get the best of us. It was the ultimate sacrifice though to save both John's wife and child.
8 The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Learning it was all a dream can be one of the saddest parts we learn during this game.
We learn that Link waking up will destroy the entire island and all who live on it and yes you know there is no other option, Link must wake up.
7 The Walking Dead Tale Tale Game
After everything our poor characters have faced in this game the ending has to be the worst.
Clementine ends up losing the man known as Lee that she has come to think of as her father. You are faced with the choice of watching him turn and have to kill him or leaving him to suffer. Either way, we lose this main character.
6 Until Dawn
Until Dawn is a horror game where we get to play many different characters and every decision we make determines if we live or die and whether the ones around us will live or die.We start learning how mean friends can be. The sisters we are playing as during the first part die no matter what we try to do. There is no way to save them. The game advances as the friends who were there the night the sisters died come back to a reunion held by the sisters’ brother.
Towards the ending, we learn the brother wasn't the killer like we had thought and never meant to harm anyone. Because we made bad decisions many are dead, but it ends as we find out the sisters we thought had died simply fell down a hole and were trapped in a mine.
One sister passed away due to injury from the fall and the other turned to cannibalism and becomes the creature who hunted us when we returned for the reunion.
5 Conker's Bad Fur Day
This game is a corny yet fun adventure where we experience a bad day. The game is based on crude humor style and doesn't have an ending any of us were expecting.Still getting everything we thought that we wanted, something is still missing. The game based around trying to save our girlfriend, and we do everything including going to the programmers and making them do our biddings, but we forget to ask them to save our girl.
So it ends with us wearing our crown and being king of the land filled with people we hate, all we want is our girlfriend back.
4 Brother's Tale Of Two Sons
In this game we start by learning our father has become ill. Now the tricky part is we play both brothers at the same time, while we embark on a journey to find the healing water.At the end of the game the older brother gets hurt, and we try to get the water to heal him, but we don't make it back in time; he dies. It ends with us healing our father and mourning the loss of our brother.
3 HaloReach
Sadly though all of our fellow crew members die leaving us alone, and the last hope we have of leaving this doomed planet is a ship that we stay behind to ensure it makes it safely off the globe.
Now we are left with only one option survive. But, no matter how hard we try; there is no way to survive. We will die no matter what we do.
2 The Last Of Us
Naughty Dog knew exactly what they were doing with this one. Kicked off right bringing us all to tears as the character we start playing as is killed. Sarah, Joel's daughter is shot by the army trying to contain the virus outbreak. Yes, stopping the outbreak by killing innocent and clearly uninfected children.Finally years later Joel gets a chance to be a father again to Ellie, a poor girl with no family. But, still grieving even many years later he doesn't want anything to do with her.
We play Joel and meet Ellie when Tess, an old friend brings her to us. We are supposed to help Ellie reach the Fireflies; a secret anti-government organization that's searching for the cure. In exchange for her safe delivery, we are promised a shipment of guns.
While traveling we learn Ellie is the key to everything and the cure is in her blood and yes we bond with her. Now finding out that the only way to get the cure is to kill Ellie. Joel will do whatever he must in order to protect her, even killing his allies the Fireflies.
The ending cutscene starts with Joel driving across a bridge with tear filled eyes shortly after we had encountered Marlene (Head Of The Fireflies) who tried to talk us out of saving Ellie from the fireflies hospital. We are in suspense wondering if we left Ellie to die for what she felt was right. But instead learn we had killed Marlene and Ellie is in the back seat.
Joel lies to Ellie telling her she was just one of many and the Fireflies have stopped looking for a cure. Sad and unclear of the future Ellie and Joel head in search of a home.
1 Gears Of War 3
This version of Gears of War has to be one of the saddest games ever released by Epic Games. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago (Known as 'Dom') have been the main characters we play as since the first Gears game released in 2006. As we played through the first two games learning about these characters and their history made us bond with them.On the date September 20th, 2011 we got to continue our adventure into the Gears universe. Fighting Lambent, Locust, and hunting their Queen Myrrah we encounter our first hard decision when cornered as the army comes closer Dom who lost his wife in the 2nd Gears game chooses to kill himself by driving a truck into an explosive machine. He wasn't able to save his wife but decides to keep Marcus and his friends alive instead of living without them.
Thinking losing Dom was as sad as this game could get, we finally reach the end. Bringing Myrrah to her knees wasn't easy Marcus's long lost father (Known as 'Adam Fenix') arrives to help save the day, we release an electric charge on the planet Sera to kill the infected.
But, just as we think it's finally all over Adam reveals the Imulsion he put into himself was set at an accelerated rate to learn how it reproduced. Now he will die as the charge is released. Marcus watches his father fall to the ground.
The game ends with Marcus and the love of his life Anya looking out over the ocean. Sadly though Marcus still fears what is to come. Gears of War 4 set to be released October 11th, 2016 and rumor based around the son of Marcus and Anya.
